Crop production case study

Location: Italy

Europe produces over 270 million tonnes of cereals and pulses annually, making them a cornerstone of the continent’s food supply. In Italy, FOODTURE conducts a case study focusing on this essential crop group to better understand and enhance their production methods.

This case study aims to test and validate inventory results from Work Package 1, focusing on the primary agricultural sector. It pays particular attention to different farming practices, such as crop rotation, and how these practices influence environmental outcomes.

A key goal is to explore the impact of land use, especially in extensive agricultural systems. Using tools developed in Work Package 2, the case study will also assess land fragmentation through detailed mapping, offering new insights into how land structure affects biodiversity and resource efficiency.

The crop production case study connects field-level practices with advanced assessment methods. In doing so, it supports FOODTURE’s mission to deliver data-driven strategies for more resilient and responsible food production in Europe.
