Where data meets practice - growing change from the ground up
Crop production
Italy hosts the FOODTURE case study on grains and pulses, representing European domestic production. The study tests Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) results from WP1 and explores land use impacts and crop rotation practices. It also supports WP2’s work on land fragmentation mapping in extensive agricultural systems.
Avocado
With 98% of Europe’s 813,000 tons of avocado consumption imported, mainly from Peru, this case study analyzes the environmental impact across different Peruvian biomes. It applies WP3’s methodological advances to identify key hotspots and includes logistics scenarios to better understand supply chain impacts.
Poultry
In Belgium, FOODTURE is testing WP2’s olfactive drone technology on a poultry farm equipped with emission sensors. Drone flight data will be compared with on-site measurements to validate the system’s ability to track emissions and enhance environmental impact assessments.
Aquaculture
With Europe producing 2.8 Mt of farmed fish annually, this Italian case study applies WP4’s improved methodologies to assess aquaculture’s environmental impact, with a strong focus on biodiversity indicators.
Multi-ingredient foodstuffs
In France, ACTIA is leading a case study on complex food products using WP1’s general framework. The focus is on how ingredient variety, transport, and processing affect environmental impact, offering insights into one of Europe’s most developed food sectors.
