The BETA Technology Center at UVIC specializes in advancing sustainability through research and innovation. Its Accounting and Sustainability Optimization team develops tools to assess environmental, social, and economic impacts, supporting industries and public bodies in informed decision-making. The group is also recognized for its expertise in sustainability communication, environmental verification, and eco-labeling.
Role in the project: Coordination of the project’s activities (lead WP9) and contribution to determining food systems impacts (lead WP5)
NTNU
NTNU is Norway’s largest university and the national leader in engineering and technology research, with its main campus in Trondheim. Guided by the vision “Knowledge for a better world”, NTNU is strongly committed to sustainability science. Its Industrial Ecology Program is internationally recognized for expertise in environmental sustainability analysis and leads several major EU-funded projects.
Role in the project: lead WP4, defining better LCIA methodologies for biodiversity and participate in WP5, 2, 8, 9
INRAE
INRAE is a world leader in agriculture, food and the environment. ITAP is a joint research unit between INRAE and the Institut Agro, pursuing work on improving the modelling of chains of causalitý human activities – environment and on expanding knowledge of food products environmental impacts to reduce them.
Role in the project: contribute to the LCIs creation and to develop open-access tools for the penetration of LCIs in the market.
UGENT
UGENT brings the expertise of high-resolution remote sensing and its application in agriculture, agricultural constructions and installations and their relation to air pollution and agrobiodiversity and (micro)climate.
Role in the project: Bringing innovative tools and methodologies for spatialized data collection (lead WP2) and contribute to the development of Developing indicators for quantifying biodiversity loss across the LCA framework
PELCAN-PUCP
The Peruvian Life Cycle Assessment & Industrial Ecology Network (PELCAN-PUCP) is a research group committed to develop research in the fields of industrial ecology, circular economy and life cycle thinking. One of the sectors in which they have developed most research in recent years is linked to marine resources and ocean conservation.
Role in the project: support in the development of biodiversity impacts linked to ocean conservation, link with the fish processing sector in Peru
EV ILVO
EV ILVO is a leading internationally recognized independent research institute and performs multidisciplinary and innovative research, both applied and fundamental, covering broad agrifood related topics aimed at economically, ecologically and socially sustainable agriculture and fisheries in a from-farm to-fork approach.
Role in the project: EV ILVO will be actively involved in the WPs 1, 2, 5 and 6, with major contributions to building LCIs and calculating the environmental impact of food systems
DTU
DTU spearheads development of methods and application of LCIA assessment of products, foods and pesticides, determining their impacts on human health and biodiversity. The PI has co-initiated the UNEP Life Cycle Initiative and the UNEP global consensus LCIA method (GLAM).
Role in the project: Leads WP3 activities, which will profit from QSA’s cutting-edge projects on ecotoxicological impacts of pesticides and chemicals
ACTIA
As a national coordination structure, ACTIA unites the activities of Food technology institutes and partners, interface and technical centers. ACTIA centers have a strong experience with the development of methods and data that will allow a better assessment of the environmental impacts of food products. ACTIA also has experience in terms of knowledge transfer and dissemination.
Role in the project: Data collection on packaging, distributors, consumers levels and dissemination
CTCPA
Affiliated to ACTIA.
The CTCPA supports the food manufacturers, from the artisan to the industrial group, in their projects. CTCPA is recognized by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food as a professional center of reference for the establishment and validation of heat treatment scales.
Role in the project: The technical centres will bring the technical expertise according to the field of action of their staff, the product category and the geographical network, with specific contributions to the work of WP1, expanding LCIs for food systems.
IFIP
Affiliated to ACTIA.
Created 60 years ago, IFIP is a professional R&D and services organisation which supports the development, competitiveness and sustainability of the pork industry by anticipating and objectifying changes to best meet the needs of all stakeholders. It is the technical link between companies, professional organisations and public authorities.
Role in the project: The technical centres will bring the technical expertise according to the field of action of their staff, the product category and the geographical network. With specific contributions to the work of WP1, expending LCIs for food systems.
ITERG
Affiliated to ACTIA.
ITERG is the technical industrial centre dedicated to fats and related products industries: vegetable oils, vegetable proteins, minor compounds and derivatives of these products. The ITERG team support projects involving specific analytical requirements, large-scale production needs, in-depth studies on formulation, nutrition and/or environmental considerations.
Role in the project: The technical centres will bring the technical expertise according to the field of action of their staff, the product category and the geographical network. With specific contributions to the work of WP1, expending LCIs for food systems.
VITO Remote Sensing
VITO is a leading independent European research and consultancy center focused on sustainable development and addressing major societal challenges such as climate change, food security, and resource scarcity. Its Remote Sensing Unit develops advanced satellite-based solutions to support governments and industries in building a more sustainable future.
Role in the project: Remote sensingbased image processing and spatial explicit information to feed the LCA models
OFF
OFF is a global, crowd-sourced food products database driven by a non-profit association of volunteers. With 100,000+ contributors worldwide, it houses 3,000,000+ products from 150 countries. Committed to transparency, all data is open and accessible for public use, fostering a community-driven approach to food information with universal relevance.
Role in the project: Contribute to filling LCIs and creating open-access tools that can be used freely by everyone.
ABE
ABE draws on its core activities as a regional cluster in enabling co-operation, collaboration and outreach, and stakeholder involvement. They have demonstrated their capacity in the role of a WP lead for communication & dissemination in 5 H2020/HE projects, and their ability to engage key audiences across Europe. They have previously prepared various trainings and workshops (on the regional and European level).
Role in the project: Communication and dissemination activities (lead WP8)
CONF
CONF is a national organization that represents and supports the interests of Italian farmers. With over 2.500 members, they are an authoritative voice working closely with institutions, businesses and local communities. Their expertise focuses on several key areas, including sustainable agriculture, agricultural/aquacultural policies, natural resource management and technological innovation in agriculture.
Role in the project: Contribute to the creation of a multi-actor group (lead WP7) and to identifying and promoting sustainable agricultural best practices and policies
ADEME
ADEME is a public industrial and commercial establishment under the supervision of the Ministry for an Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, Ministry for the Energy Transition and the Ministry for Higher Education and Research. It aims at promoting sustainable transitions for citizens and companies in various economic sectors, holding a leading role on production of environmental data on food systems in France.
Role in the project: Expansion of LCIs for food systems (lead WP1) and the usage of results to boost sustainable food chains.
EPC
The EPC is an entity within the Department of Economy, Rural Development and Europe of the Province of Antwerp. The EPC is the provincial research institute for applied poultry research in Belgium. At EPC every climate-controlled compartment can provide daily continuous monitoring of ammonia emission, continuous data om in house climate conditions, daily animal performance parameters, weekly/monthly specific health and welfare measurements
Role in the project: Validate project’s innovations and disseminate to broader stakeholders’ network.
UCSC
UCSC is renowned for its excellence in Agricultural and Food sectors, offering programs in Agricultural Science, Food Science, and Agri-food economics. The Department of Agri-food Economics concentrates on sustainable diets and the impact of EU policies on agri-food chains. They’re involved in analysing food baskets across Europe, evaluating diet-sustainability interactions, and developing econometric models.
Role in the project: Definition of current and future scenarios of food baskets from an econometric and economic perspective
UPI
UPI Puglia is a non-profit organization composed of all the provinces of Puglia Region, Italy. It promotes and strengthens the activities of the administrations represented, ensuring coordination at the regional level. Its institutional responsibility is the coordination of efforts for social and economic development programs, to promote environmental protection, supporting systematic relationships with other institutions
Role in the project: Drafting and dissemination of policy recommendations
FiBL
The Swiss-based Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) is one of the world’s leading organic farming research centers. Finally, FiBL, with IFOAM EU, runs the OFK platform, an already existing key knowledge platform for organic farming.
Role in the project: Multi-criteria sustainability assessments of agriculture and food systems (lead WP6) and contributes to the LC development (WP1), and the upscaling of environmental impacts at food system level (WP5) and its policy expertise relevant for the assessment of current EU carbon farming policies
