Aquaculture is a growing part of Europe’s food supply, producing 4.2 million tonnes of fish per year. In Italy, FOODTURE is diving deep into this sector with a dedicated case study led by Confagricoltura.
Focusing on methodologies from Work Package 4 , the study will apply advanced biodiversity indicators to assess the environmental impacts of aquaculture. This includes evaluating how different aquaculture systems affect ecosystems, species diversity, and water quality.
By testing and validating cutting-edge assessment tools, this case study aims to bring clarity and precision to one of Europe’s fastest-evolving food sectors—ensuring sustainable growth that doesn’t come at the cost of our aquatic biodiversity.
