Avocado case study

Location: Peru

Europe consumes over 813,000 tonnes of avocados each year, with 98% imported, mostly from Peru

As part of FOODTURE, a dedicated case study in Peru will assess the environmental impacts of avocado production across different biomes. The study compares ecosystems to identify hotspots and evaluate how to accurately report impacts.

This case study will also apply new methodological improvements from Work Package 3, helping to refine how we measure land use, emissions, and resource consumption in global food trade. In addition, it will explore scenario-based assessments of logistics, analyzing the environmental cost of transporting avocados across continents.

The avocado case study connects international production practices with advanced European assessment tools. This case study helps FOODTURE support more transparent, globally aware food systems—from farm to fork.
